Thursday evening, billionaire PayPal co-founder Peter Thiel delivered a speech in support of Trump at the Republican National Convention in Cleveland. To the shock of the Republican crowd, he affirmed that he was “proud to be gay.” The only previous time an openly gay speaker spoke at the Republican National Convention was the year 2000, and Thiel is the first gay R.N.C. speaker to discuss his sexual orientation. “When I was a kid, the great debate was about how to defeat the Soviet Union. And we won. Now we are told that the great debate is about who gets to use which bathroom,” he said. “This is a distraction from our real problems. Who cares? Of course, every American has a unique identity. I am proud to be gay. I am proud to be a Republican.” His declaration was met with cheers of “U.S.A.! U.S.A.
